Optical fiber based sensor system for monitoring of infrastructures

FEBUS Optics is an innovative company based in Pau (France) bringing a new generation of optical fiber based sensor system to the market, in particular for the maintenance and monitoring of infrastructures.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

Decarbonizing the economy has become a high priority in the fight against "climate change". One of the key solutions to achieve this goal is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), a technique that helps reduce CO2 emissions by underground sequestration.

FEBUS Optics, with its well surveillance solution FOWell, brings its innovative distributed fiber optic sensing technology to provide a safer and more cost-effective Measurement, Monitoring and Verification (MMV) CCS solution, whether offshore or onshore.

FOWELL, A SOLUTION FOR MONITORING CCS OPERATIONS

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology involves capturing CO2 before it reaches the atmosphere, transporting it via pipelines, and injecting it into deep geological formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or saline formations.

However, this decarbonization technology comes with risks that our innovative solution, FOWell, helps to mitigate. Our distributed fiber optic sensing systems and our dedicated FOWell Suite software ensure continuous, real-time surveillance before, during, and after CO2 injection:

MONITORING CO2 MIGRATION AND CO2 PLUME

If the integrity of the storage reservoir is compromised, two major events may occur:

  • CO2 migration along faults and fractures: CO2 migration along geological faults or fractures, leading to leakage into shallow aquifers or into the atmosphere
  • CO2 plume migration outside the storage reservoir: risking CO2 stabilization after injection has ceased.

The FEBUS A1 (DAS - Distributed Acoustic Sensing), with its state-of-the-art sensitivity, enables real-time monitoring of these two issues.

With a high fidelity Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP), the integrity of cap rocks is monitored.

Similarly, time-lapse VSP allows for the analysis of CO2 plume migration.

SEISMIC ACTIVITY SURVEILLANCE

The FOWell system is easy to install, as it only requires deploying fiber optic cable downhole along with a data acquisition system at surface.

We recommend permanent cable installation, both onshore and offshore, for long-term monitoring. Additionally, our system can monitor well activity while detecting seismic events:

    • microseismicity
    • induced seismicity
    • surface uplift and deformation

Large-scale injection of CO2 can lead to underground fractures or reactivate old geological faults. Similarly, increased pressure in the reservoir due to CO2 injection can cause significant surface uplift.

Such events require careful surveillance to avoir the risks of leakage, infrastructure damage, and danger to the public.

OTHER FEBUS OPTICS WELL AND RESERVOIR SURVEILLANCE SOLUTIONS

FEBUS Optics has developed FOWell, an innovative and comprehensive solution combining the performance of its measurement systems and dedicated software to control well integrity, monitor and optimize geothermal wells, and unconventional oil and gas wells. FOWell can also be used to characterize reservoirs.

All of our interrogators come with a 3-year warranty. Our experienced team provides training and ongoing support throughout projects. Finally, we offer customized maintenance contracts and service continuity.
