Optical fiber based sensor system for monitoring of infrastructures

FEBUS Optics is an innovative company based in Pau (France) bringing a new generation of optical fiber based sensor system to the market, in particular for the maintenance and monitoring of infrastructures.

Unconventional well monitoring

In the oil and gas industry, hydraulic fracturing is a common technique to optimize resource extraction from shale formations. Monitoring these operations is essential to ensure safety, maximize productivity, and minimize associated environmental risks.

FOWell is FEBUS Optics’ innovative and advanced solution for continuous surveillance and receiving potential real-time alerts. Based on distributed fiber optic sensing technology, it combines the performance of our patented measurement systems with our dedicated software solution developed in-house for well monitoring.

FOWell combines low-frequency acoustic measurements (LF-DAS) and microseismic data acquisition with our FEBUS A1 (DAS – Distributed Acoustic Sensing) and temperature surveillance with our FEBUS T1-R (DTS – Distributed Temperature Sensing). The asset is monitored, its production optimized, and environmental risks minimized.

OPTIMIZING HYDRAULIC FRACTURING OPERATIONS

FOWell, the unconventional well monitoring solution, enables for the optimization of hydraulic fracturing operations by:

  • monitoring injection allocation
  • improving frac design parameters on a stage-by-stage basis.

The uniformity of the proppant placement across the reservoir is maximized.

In addition, FEBUS’s technology can be used to monitor stage isolation to minimize interstage communication and improve treatment effectiveness.

When monitoring the fiber from an offset well, FOWell can be used to measure cross-well communication and fracture driven interactions to:

  • improve future well spacing designs
  • maximize hydrocarbon recovery in the targeted reservoir.

By using our low-frequency FEBUS A1 (DAS – Distributed Acoustic Sensing) -LF-DAS-, the deformation and temperature changes caused by fracture interactions at each stage of fracturing are quantified. The complexity of these interferences is analyzed. A high-resolution view of fracture growth, both upwards and downwards, as well as their opening and closing, is generated, allowing for improved frac treatment designs.

FRACTURES SURVEILLANCE WITH DISTRIBUTED FIBER OPTIC SENSING

The FOWell solution enables real-time surveillance of fractures generated during hydraulic fracturing operations through:

Our technology detects any well anomalies that could jeopardize well integrity or negatively impact the environment. Moreover, it monitors the placement of the proppant injected to prevent fracture closure, thus ensuring reservoir connectivity.

The FEBUS A1 (DAS – Distributed Acoustic Sensing) is also highly effective for micro seismic campaigns. The acquired data helps understand the geometry of vertical and horizontal fractures (“pancake fractures”) as well as potential inclined fractures, by applying inversion models.

The design of stimulation operations is optimized, and the risks of uncontrolled “run-away” super-fracs are reduced.
